Due to the impact of coronavirus, the way people are travelling and social distancing have changed and Edinburgh Council are working the Scottish Government and Sustrans to make changes to roads to make it safer for those walking, running and cycling.

On Monday morning, Cllr McVey appealed to the public to get in contact to suggest streets which couldn't benefit from limiting vehicle access.

Emergency closure of three Edinburgh roads for walkers and cyclists

At the end of April, the council said that “emergency measures” to ban traffic were among the first by a Scottish council to create more space for pedestrians and riders to safely exercise during the lockdown.

Silverknowes Road in the north of the city, Braid Road, south from Morningside, Cammo Walk and Links Gardens, beside Leith Links are closed to traffic currently.

Edinburgh City Council said its first action was to “tackle areas highlighted as pinch points for pedestrians and cyclists and will include some road lane closures and the implementation of temporary cycle lanes”, adding there has been “significant, understandable public demand for action to help facilitate safe daily exercise and the movement of essential workers”.
