Emergency services were called to the City of Edinburgh By-Pass, east of the Sherriffhall roundabout near Dalkeith at 8.25pm yesterday, where a car had come off the road, flipped on to its roof and hit trees, a spokeswoman for the fire service said.

A 37-year-old woman freed herself and the boy from the car before the emergency services arrived.

“The car had rolled off the road on to its roof and hit some trees, the trees stopped it from going any further. A 37-year-old female with a two-year-old male child managed to escape before our arrival,” the fire service spokeswoman said.

“The boy was checked over at the scene and he had no injuries but the female was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for shock and minor cuts to her hands and head. The two-year-old travelled with her to hospital.”
