Under the new timetables the first and last tram will still run at the same time.

But customers should expect other services to run every 15 minutes during the day, with this frequency being kept under ‘constant review’.

Managing Director Lea Harrison said: “Due to the current government guidelines surrounding the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) and the use of public transport we have seen a reduction in customer demand.

“We have decided to tailor the service to the needs of the customer, while taking into account the availability of staff.

“These are unprecedented circumstances and I want to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their support, and my colleagues who continue to go above and beyond to provide our city with a tram service.”

It comes after Lothian Buses announced it will reduce services from Monday, with more details to be announced tomorrow.

Interim Managing Director at Lothian Buses Nigel Serafini said: “By introducing a reduced service from Monday, we are aiming to ensure we can continue to provide vital links across the city for those who rely on our services.

“We would encourage customers to plan their journeys in advance using our mobile app or website and follow our social media channels for updates.”
