An Edinburgh resident said he “couldn’t believe his eyes” after a man returned his Gucci wallet containing cash five days after it went missing.

Joseph Kidd, from Ratho, lost his £300 wallet containing £40 while out and about in Edinburgh last week.

Despite retracing his steps around the city, the 20-year-old had no luck in finding his luxury item and presumed it had been stolen.

But about five days later, a staff member from a BP garage in Cliftonhill Road, Newbridge, turned up on his doorstep holding the wallet, which contained exactly £40.

“I couldn’t actually believe my eyes, I was completely shocked,” Joseph said.

“This was a terrible loss for me, and I had purchased this with one of my first ever wages from a job promotion.

“I thought I had lost it on a walk in The Meadows, or that somebody had maybe taken it out my pocket. I had clearly accepted after day three I wasn’t going to see it again, and was truly gutted.

“But the chap returned it in the same condition I left it in, and not a single penny was missing.

“It goes to show that there’s some really good people out there.”

The local hero had tracked Joseph’s address from his driving licence, which was in one of the wallet’s card holders, and turned up on his doorstep at 10.30pm on Monday night.

“When he came to the door my parents were shouting me down and sounded very shocked, I was confused,” Joseph added.

“I walked downstairs to see the man, fully dressed in his BP uniform, standing there with my wallet!

“He returned it in his own time, in his own car.

“I of course rewarded him with some cash and off he went.

“I truly cannot believe it found it’s way back to me. It meant so much.”

Joseph, who works as a website designer for Eastern Western Motor Group, cancelled his credit cards and was due to order a new driving licence just hours before the wallet was returned.

“It had fallen out my pocket on the forecourt of the petrol station when I was there several days ago,” Joseph added.

“Luckily this chap had picked it up for me and kept it safe for a few days.

“The man seemed ecstatic to have done a good deed, and he explained that the garage had it for a few days, but were waiting for a call,” he added.

Joseph posted about his lucky day on Twitter and the local hero has gone viral.
