One of Midlothian’s best known characters – Black Diamond chairman John Ritchie – has passed away following a sudden illness.

John (67) made his last broadcast on the community radio station last week.

After his tireless campaigning, Black Diamond became one of the first stations in the UK to receive a community radio licence in 2007.

Presenter Gordon Clayton this week led tributes to his colleague: “He is going to be a massive loss. I have been involved with him over the last 10 years quite closely.

“He was very much the leader and champion of Black Diamond FM. He sometimes upset those in officialdom that he saw as obstructing what he wanted to do.He spoke his mind.”

John Ritchie’s funeral service will take place at Rosslyn Chapel on Friday (March 14), at 1.30pm. Donations if desired to Rosslyn Chapel Trust.
