Two-thirds of Midlothian street cleaners are not at work

An “appalling” long-term sickness rate among Midlothian Council street sweepers has been linked to a recent pay cut.

Department chiefs revealed that the 30-man squad has been functioning at one third of its capacity since June.

Waste management business manager Phil Riddell told a special council meeting: “We have had horrendous problems in the service. There are times when we have been down to five street sweepers.

“It’s the worst I have ever seen for sickness absence in 18 years. The fact is that we have struggled with staff and are struggling to deliver the service that we are delivering. It is appalling.”
