Fatally hurt ex policeman had lost job

A FORMER police inspector found fatally injured with his wife and six-year-old daughter had been sacked last week, it has been confirmed.

Toby Day, 37, was found in the house in Melton Mowbray on Thursday after a 15-year-old-girl, believed to be another daughter, raised the alarm.

Police said they had begun a murder inquiry but were not looking for anyone else in regard to the case.

Mr Day was dismissed from Leicestershire Constabulary after a misconduct hearing on December 1.

Army conducts controlled blasts

Several controlled explosions have been carried out by the Army in Londonderry, police have said.

Earlier on Friday, a number of houses were evacuated at Lonemoor Road in the city.

The security alert began when police moved into the area to examine a suspicious car. Police last night said the alert was continuing.

Soldier dies after Helmand bomb

A SOLDIER who died from injuries sustained on Tuesday in Afghanistan has been named as Sapper Elijah Bond of 35 Engineer Regiment, Royal Engineers.

Sapper Bond, 24, from Cornwall, was conducting an engineer reconnaissance task in central Helmand when he was hurt in an improvised bomb explosion. He died at a Birmingham hospital on Thursday.

Public to decide on Moors murderer’s fate

Moors murderer Ian Brady will face a public hearing on whether he should be returned to prison.

Brady, jailed in 1966 for the murder of three children, has been detained at Ashworth hospital since 1985. In August 2010, Brady made a request that a review into where he is imprisoned be open to the public.

It will be only the second mental health tribunal hearing to be held in public. A judge granted permission in October, but it can only now be reported.

‘Jekyll and Hyde’ military expert jailed

North Yorkshire: A “Jekyll and Hyde” military expert has been jailed for five years after police investigating a long-running harassment campaign discovered a cache of arms.

When police went to Kenneth Ward’s home, officers found grenades, machine guns, bayonets and ammunition. Ward, 64, of Chop Gate, North Yorkshire, admitted harassment, exposure and firearm crimes.

50 evacuated from Winchester hospital

Winchester: More than 50 people were evacuated from Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester as crews tackled a large fire.

People in the accident and emergency and intensive care units, as well as some patients undergoing surgery, were moved to safe areas.

The A&E department was not expected to reopen until today. About 100 firefighters fought the blaze, which is now under control.
