Perhaps that question would be better asked: “Is there such a thing as a good person?” asks Pastor Ben Shore (Loanhead Baptist Church).
We know that there are nice people in the world. There are certainly people who are helpful to others. However, does being “nice” and “helpful” make someone good?
The Bible states in Genesis regarding God’s original creation that “it was good”; However, when Adam and Eve sinned against God, that all changed. The Bible says in Romans 5:12: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Adam and Eve before they sinned were truly good people. However, sin marred their good and perfect state.
Have you ever considered how many truly good people you know? You may have a deep affection for someone and really appreciate them as a person. However, if you were completely honest, you would have to say that the best person you know is not a perfect person. God’s Word agrees with that assessment and says in Romans 3:10: “There is none righteous, no not one.” Without exception we all have unrighteousness or sin.
Another question to consider is, “If good people go to heaven, why did Jesus die?” Jesus asked His Heavenly Father if there was another option other than the cross. The Bible records His prayer in Matthew 26:39: “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” If good people go to Heaven, it would have been cruel for God to crucify His Son unnecessarily.
One final consideration regarding our ability to enter Heaven by our goodness is the testimony of God’s law. If the law has anything to say against us, we are not good enough to go to Heaven. Revelation 20:13: “...and they were judged every man according to their works.” I cannot pass that test of my “goodness” Can you?
Jesus alone is good. Matthew 19:17: “....there is none good but one, that is, God.”
Believing in Him alone makes us good enough to go to Heaven. 1John 5:13: “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life.” Without Jesus, nobody is good enough to go to Heaven.
