Edinburgh weather forecast: Snow and ice warning in place for the next five days

After a cold week for many, the next few days will see Edinburgh gripped by snow and icy conditions, forecasters have said.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for most parts of the country, including the Capital and the Lothians, and is expected to last until Wednesday next week.

Forecasters have warned that some areas reaching 200m or higher will see up to about ten to 15cm of snow fall over the next few days.

The Met Office has warned the extended period of freezing temperatures will bring a risk of slippery pavements, and motorists have been warned of the dangers of icy patches and snow fall on roads that will likely cause disruption to traffic.

The cold air causing the drop in temperatures is coming from Scandinavia, weather experts have said.

Heavy snowfall is expected to impact other parts of the country including the Highlands where some higher areas could see up to 50cm of snow.

The yellow weather warning is in place for the entire eastern coast of the country with some council areas further inland also affected over the next five days.

On Friday The Scotsman reported about 20 drivers had to be rescued after a snow storm buried the A835 between Ullapool and Garve.

Weather experts have also warned of disruption to rail services due to snowfall which has brought travel in some areas to a standstill.

Heavy snowfall on the rail track between Carrbridge to Blair Atholl on Thursday caused disruption to train services between Edinburgh and Glasgow to Inverness.
