Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst told the Edinburgh Evening News the mercury could peak at 28c at some point during the day in Edinburgh on Friday.

He said there is a chance of rain late on Friday and into early Saturday and that thunderstorms are unlikely – but can not be ruled out.

Saturday is likely to feel fresher but temperatures could still reach 19c or 20c in the Capital.

Mr Dewhurst said that Edinburgh will be among the hottest parts of Scotland tomorrow, although parts of the Moray coast could reach 29c.
