Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir said this wintry weather was brought on by a “bank of rain which readily turns to snow” moving from Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile, racing at Musselburgh has fallen victim to the weather, with the East Lothian course pulling the plug on Thursday’s fixture.

Musselburgh Raccourse general manager Bill Farnsworth said: “While the weather was kind to us for our Betway New Year’s Day meeting and we were lucky to stage an outstanding card on New Year’s Day, this time the weather has gone against us.”
