William Hill to open a second bookies in Dalkeith

Councillors on Midlothian Licensing Board have reluctantly approved William Hill’s bid to open a second betting office in Dalkeith.

Moving against the opening of a bookies at the former Old Meal Market Inn, 2-4 St Andrew Street, Councillor Joe Wallace (SNP) said: “I find it incredible that people are having to go to foodbanks and we are encouraging them to go along to betting premises.”

Clerk Alan Turpie explained that overprovision was not grounds for refusal: “The only three grounds on which we can refuse are prevention of crime, the protection of children and vulnerable people, or if the gambling is not in a fair and open manner.”
