The first sod has been cut marking the start of work on the new primary school at Gorebridge North.
The Gorebridge school, designed by AHR Architects and being built by Morrison Construction, will cater for up to 558 pupils with two classes in each primary year.
Councillor Bob Constable, the cabinet member for education, said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming the first pupils next year in what will be a state-of-the-art learning environment.
“With so many new homes being built in the area, I’m sure it won’t be long until the school becomes a valued community resource.”
The school will cost around £8.9 million, the majority of which will come from developer’s contributions.
Eddie Robertson, Managing Director, Morrison Construction, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen to build this new primary school in Gorebridge on behalf of Midlothian Council. We look forward to continuing our strong relationship with the council and to creating top-class facilities for pupils and teachers, as well as to ensuring the project benefits the wider local community.”
The school, east of Whitehouse Way, is set to be completed by autumn 2016. It will have an outdoor multi-use games area, changing rooms and sports pitch. As well as facilities for community use.
Meanwhile, Midlothian Council will hold public meetings on Tuesday (at Roslin Primary)and Wednesday (at Loanhead Primary) 7-8.30pm, on the proposed catchment area for the new primary school at Bilston, covering proposed changes to the catchment areas of Loanhead, Paradykes and Roslin primary schools. The changes, if given the go-ahead, would take effect from August 2016. All housing in Bilston would form the catchment area of the new school. The residential areas at Damhead, Lothianburn, Nivensknowe Park, Pentland Park, Straiton Park and Corby Craig would also transfer from the catchment of Loanhead Primary School into Bilston Primary School. The residential areas in the vicinity of Mayshade Road and Park Avenue would transfer from the catchment of Loanhead Primary School to Paradykes Primary School.
