Service to community

Thank you to Craig Finlay and The Advertiser for reporting on the recent installation of the park benches at King’s Park that are dedicated to our fallen soldiers from the Dalkeith community.

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank the Midlothian Council Criminal Justice Team and the clients of the Community Payback Orders who made the benches.

The men and women on the Community Payback Orders provide an excellent service to the community and I believe this is a beneficial way for people who have fallen foul of the law to give something back to the community and hopefully feel the benefit serving our community brings.

It is sadly often the case that people who commit crime feel detached and isolated from their community. By carrying out work that benefits all of us, clients of this scheme build self confidence, and establish a connection with the wider community. It also helps to gain new skills and see the value in honest work. There are no doubt other residents of Midlothian who would like to carry out projects or work to improve their towns and villages. I would urge anyone looking for support in their endeavours to contact the council to see if they can be supported by this scheme.

John Hackett

Chairman, Dalkeith & District Community Council
