Athletics: Emma Lowry jumps to victory at the Emirates

EDINBURGH Athletic club long jumper Emma Lowry gave herself a Commonwealth Games boost by winning the long jump at the Yuletide open indoor meeting at the new Emirates Arena in Glasgow with a leap of 1.80 metres.

The jump is just more than three months too early to rank as a Games qualifier but it puts her joint second with clubmate Jayne Nisbet on the Scottish rankings for 2012 and eighth on the Scottish all-time indoor rankings.

Another clubmate, and Scotland’s top female high jumper of 2012, Emma Nuttall, flew out from Edinburgh on Boxing Day for San Diego to attend a training camp at the splendid US Olympic training centre in
Edinburgh’s twin city after a short visit home for Christmas.

Nuttall, who had a best of 1.86m last season, is halfway through the second year of a
degree course at Trinity Western University in Vancouver where she is being coached by the former Scottish national coach Laurier Primeau, and hopes to begin competing
indoors in mid-January.
