Athletics: Gauson cooking with gas

Kris Gauson of Edinburgh AC, who returns to Scotland next week to prepare for the Olympic Trials at Birmingham from June 22-24, won a fast 1500 metres in Indianapolis this week in 3:39.87 and expressed delight at the way his training had been going: “I’m looking forward to an 800 on Sunday then off back to the UK.”

Congratulating him was clubmate Chris O’Hare, who is looking to qualify for the NCAA 1500m Championship final in Des Moines, Iowa, tomorrow before heading home. Both athletes owe much to the coaching of Dave Campbell in Edinburgh and he is still helping to produce champions with his latest success coming in last weekend’s Scottish Championships when Sarah McCormack (Moorfoot Runners) won the women’s 5000m in what was only her second serious track race.

McCormack had been concentrating on hill racing but has now been invited to take part in the UK Trials. Also called up for the Trials is Ross Matheson (Lasswade) who, has clocked a 3:46.64 1500m recently.
