Athletics: Gauson faces tough race

Scottish 800 metres champion Kris Gauson (Edinburgh AC) is up against some really tough opposition when he launches his 1,500m bid in the World University Games in Shenzhen, China, later today.

Drawn in heat one of three heats, four-minute miler Gauson, whose 1,500m best is 3:40.59, faces three men who have run significantly faster than him including two, Vlatch Sokolov (Russia) and Imad Touil (Algeria), who have run under 3:37.0.

With three to qualify automatically for the final plus the three fastest losers overall, Gauson will do exceptionally well to reach the final.

Fellow Scot David Bishop, the other GB rep, who has a best of 3:41.12, is in heat two in a similar position with three opponents under 3:38.0.
