Athletics: Sprint shock for Roberts

Welsh doctor Wyn Roberts is the surprise back-marker for the New Year Sprint, scheduled to take place at Musselburgh Racecourse on Saturday, December 31 and Sunday, January 1.

The 24-year-old Swansea Harrier, who is the Welsh 100 metres champion, will be off a rookie mark of three metres for his first bid to win the £4000 first prize.

Roberts will give away a start of 2.5m to Greg Turnbull (Jedburgh), a previous runner-up.

Scottish Commonwealth Games 400m runner Gemma Nicol (Dunfermline) is the leading woman off 17.50m.
