Badminton: Cooper ready for title tilt

Edinburgh’s Jillie Cooper and Longniddry’s Paul van Rietvelde will be among the home hopes at the Scottish International Badminton Championships which were set to begin today at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall.

Cooper forms a new partnership with Scot Watson Briggs in the mixed doubles.

Van Rietvelde arrives at the Kelvin Hall on a high. Just last month, the 20-year-old partnered England’s Ben Stawski to a first international victory in the men’s doubles at the Turkish Open.

With Susan Egelstaff out through injury, home hopes in the singles lie with Bothwell’s Kirsty Gilmour in the women’s event, while Glasgow’s Kieran Merrilees heads the men’s home line-up.
