Bankier and Adcock reach quarter-finals

Scotland’s Imogen Bankier and England’s Chris Adcock continued a fantastic run when they made it into today’s quarter-finals of the mixed doubles at the Yonex All England Badminton Open in Birmingham.

The British couple scored a massive shock by beating the Chinese World Champions Nan Zhang and Yunlei Zhao in the first round and they battled to another terrific second round victory over a top South Korean pair. After losing the first game, Glasgow’s Bankier and Nottingham’s Adcock took the second and then came from 6-9 in the third to win 15-21, 21-19, 21-19, and reach the televised stage of the championships.

It was just the boost they needed in a bid to be selected for Team GB at this year’s Olympic Games in London. Earlier in the day, the new rankings saw them slip three places to No. 17, just two spots ahead of England’s Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork.

Runners-up at last year’s World Championships at Wembley, Bankier and Adcock again showed the benefits of playing in front of a packed home crowd in the thrilling hour-long match. “It was a really tough match and so good to go through to the quarter-finals,” said 24-year-old Bankier. They now face another Asian couple in Malaysia’s Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh.
