Basketball: Chopper cuts down Glasgow

Boroughmuir Blaze centre and Edinburgh University coach “Chopper” Pettett has helped consign Glasgow University to a double defeat in the last week.

First Blaze baulked the students 56-52 at their own Stevenson Building gym, then he helped Edinburgh University to beat them 72-70 in the British Universities Northern Premier Division at the Kelvin Hall, a victory which could yet save them from relegation.

Kings guard and vet student Michael Kirkpatrick, making his first appearance this term for Edinburgh, was an undoubted factor in the second upset in which Glasgow led by ten points late in the third quarter and seven with five minutes left.

But Edinburgh sealed the victory with two free throws from forward Ben Warrington, who grabbed an offensive rebound on the buzzer after Kirkpatrick had missed a clinching shot.

Eric Gross top-scored for Edinburgh with 24.

Edinburgh women were not so lucky, losing 104-33 at Leeds Carnegie and their trip to fellowstrugglers Sheffield Hallam, a week on Wednesday, is now crucial.
