Basketball: Kings and Fury breeze into final

EDINBURGH KINGS and Falkirk Fury completed the formalities of the second legs of their Scottish basketball league play-off semi-finals to qualify to meet in the final at the Lagoon Centre, Paisley, on Saturday.

Latvian guard-forward Ed Rekis celebrated his last game at Portobello High School for Kings with an outstanding 41 points as the city side romped to a 92-53 win to complete a 173-107 aggregate victory over Glasgow University, the third place finishers.

Fury were almost as severe in defeating Troon Tornadoes 
76-46 for a 142-85 aggregate win. But the women’s semis went against form with 
Edinburgh Kool Kats, who finished third in the league, going through to meet fourth finishers St Mirren, who beat Polonia Phoenix for the fifth time in six meetings this season.

Kats looked on shaky ground after only shading their home leg by one point at Portobello but a much better defensive performance saw them close out the home side 60-54 at the Lagoon Centre.

“We managed to maintain our defensive focus throughout and were never behind,” said coach Ben Gunn.

Hannah Peacock top-scored with 14 points, Lauren Walker added 11 and Tracey Phillips ten. Corkindale replied with 15 for Rocks, with Siobhan Moore adding 13.

At the Crags, Polonia Phoenix led 39-30 to go three points ahead of St Mirren on aggregate, but Sarah Thomson’s 20 points and Rebecca Cumming’s 15 helped see Saints to a 62-58 win and a 118-108 aggregate success.
