Basketball: Kings’ cadet force ready for high school reunion

Edinburgh KINGS’ all-conquering cadet men travel to North Berwick on Sunday for a Scottish Cup quarter-final derby against East Lothian Peregrines which will be more like a North Berwick High school reunion.

Following the MacKay brothers, Ali and Grant, who have moved on to take up basketball scholarships in the United States and Niall Mackle, who is now at Aberdeen University, Kings have two more outstanding players from the same nursery in Gregor Gray and Liam Mackle, Niall’s brother, but Peregrines, who have only entered age group national league competition for the first time this season, have five more from the same school, Alex McKay, Findlay Graham, Greig Govenlock, Chris McHardy and Ross MacFarlane.

Edinburgh Kings and Boroughmuir Blaze senior men both have home Scottish Cup quarter-final ties tomorrow against non-national league opposition and should progress.

Blaze face Paisley’s PSG Gators at St Thomas’s (12.20pm) and Kings host Aberdeen Beacon at Portobello (3pm). Beacon are the same team who are through to the quarters of the Scottish Chairman’s Cup and are due to play Boroughmuir Masters, the Blaze veterans who were awarded a walk-over when St Mirren’s league team defaulted.
