Blaze not daunted as title bid hinges on a big win at Fury

Undaunted by their loss to Falkirk in the Scottish Cup Final Boroughmuir Blaze go into tonight's Scottish Basketball League clash with Fury believing they can upset the odds.

Not only must they beat their Cup conquerors on Fury’s home court at the Mariner Sports Centre at 8pm but they must do so by at least 17 points and hope for favours elsewhere in their title bid. Falkirk on the other hand need only a win.

“This will be the biggest challenge of the season so far but we’ve learned a lot from the Cup Final and I’m confident we’ll bring our talent to the game,” said Blaze coach Simon Turner, who confirmed that they will be without their dynamic forward Tomas Cicenas, who has returned to Canada.

The outside shooting of captain Eoghann Dover, John Browne, Sam Stott and Jordan Green and their renowned pressure defence will still be crucial to Blaze’s chances of success.

But even if they do win by the required margin – Fury won their first league class 77-61 – they need Edinburgh Kings to do them a favour by beating Fury in two weeks and also win both their remaining two games against Edinburgh University and Glasgow University.

Falkirk coach John Bunyan is also up for the task: “This week’s Blaze game is one we have targeted from the start of the season and it’s the chance to win back the title by beating the team who took it from us last year. It would give us our fourth title in five seasons and that’s a bit special.”

Edinburgh University travel to Glasgow tomorrow to face Glasgow University at the Stevenson Building at 3pm.
