Boroughmuir Blaze is a fixture fit for Kings

Though Falkirk Fury top the table with an unbeaten record, Kings and St Mirren are chasing hard with only one loss each and Blaze still have a strong interest in the title race despite two defeats.

Blaze however were far from convincing in their 64-58 away win over bottom-of-the table Glasgow University at the weekend.

“We led throughout but GU pushed us hard,” said coach Simon Turner.

“We’re not playing at our best yet and we’ve a massive challenge on our hands to beat Kings.”

Kings were comfortable 62-46 away winners over Stirling Knights at the Peak Centre but could also claim not to be playing at their best yet.

Sister club Edinburgh Kool Kats are through to the semi-finals of the Scottish Women’s Cup thanks to a 70-32 away win over Glasgow University, a success which maintains their season’s unbeaten record and puts them in pole position for a cup and league double next year.

But coming up hard on the rails are Capital rivals Polonia Phoenix who demoralised an injury-hit St Andrews University, last season’s losing cup finalists, 65-29 at Gracemount High, helped by 20 points from Julie Ritchie and 13 each from Les Jackson and Lyn Cochrane.

“They’re starting to play as a team,” said delighted coach Toni Szifris.

Edinburgh University men were just 29-22 down to St Mirren at the Lagoon Centre but could not match Saints height and fire-power as the Paisley side went on to win 78-55.

“We were short of four power forwards and Rodrigo Colorado and Alex Steffen were carrying injuries,” said EU coach Achilleas Chatzitheocharis.

Colorado however still top-scored with 16, Ronan Mullan adding 13 and Lauritz Juffers 12.
