Bowls: Cheese Town boys toast fine victory in WLBA final

Kirkliston captured the White Knights-sponsored WLBA Top Ten title for a record-extending tenth time with a commanding 6-2 victory over Newbridge in the final at Uphall Station.

Wins in the Singles, Pairs and the Fours sparked the celebrations in the Kirkliston camp while Newbridge had to settle for the hard-earned consolation of a narrow win in the Triples.

Kirkliston are the reigning national champions and there was much to admire about the latest success of “The Cheesetown Boys”, not least the winning performance of spearhead figure Raymond Logan in the Singles.

In a flashback to the good old “Super Ray” days, the 1998 national champion showed exciting skills to score a 21-17 win over fellow Hamilton Trophy colleague Alec Allan.

Allan (49) led 7-3 but didn’t stay in the driving seat for long as Logan quickly and smoothly engaged a higher gear that resulted in a 1, 1, 3, (2), 3 acceleration that saw him hit the front at 11-9.

Logan (56) dropped a single to 10 on the 12th end but that inspired him to a 2, 3, (1), 1 reply that brought the winning line into sharp focus at 17-11 and, three ends later, the former internationalist had Allan at his mercy at 20-13.

Allan did manage to create a rising tension on the banking with a 1, 2, 1 fightback to 17 but Logan killed that growing menace with a single to 21 on the 23rd end.

The Logan influence was also strong in the Fours with Grant, the 35-year-old recently crowned WL Master, skipping his brother Greg at third, their father Gordon at second, and Andrew Suddon at lead, to an 18-14 victory.

The Kirkliston rink opened in a blaze of glory with the carding of a mighty 5 at the first end but from 14-13 down it took a grandstand finish of 3, 1, 1 for them to beat James Aitken, Ian Robertson, Jim Speirs and Blair Mackie.

These were hard times for Newbridge but a glimmer of hope was raised when 30-year-old cap Thomas Mann skipped Stuart Affleck and Paul Sweeney to a 12-10 win over David Masterton Jnr, Calum Logan and former Scotland skip John Aitken.

The clash of the Speirs brothers in the Pairs saw 32-year-old cap Neil of KBC finish 3, 1, 1, 3, 3 to skip Steven Forrest to a 22-9 win over Drew Paterson and James.
