Bowls: Powerful Portobello pummel Teviotdale to edge back into top spot

Portobello surged back to the top of the table in Division 1C of the national indoor bowls league with a 98-56 win over bottom club Teviotdale.

Wins on all four rinks – skipped by Andrew Caldwell, Chris Steven, Stuart Betts and George Johnston – contributed to the result that pushed Portobello one point ahead of Tweedbank and Abbeyview.

There was some pre-match drama which meant team
organiser Robert Wood and Jamie Reid were late call-offs, resulting in Craig McCall and Andy Davie being drafted in to play in the rinks skipped by Betts and Johnston respectively. “I managed to watch the match and was entertained by some good individual performance and the team effort
was solid so that made it a pleasing afternoon for me,” said Wood.

The formbook screamed out a home win was on the cards and Portobello did in fact lead from start to finish and having
established a 32-18 authority on the first seven-end phase proceeded to dominate the second 28-15, and the third 36-23.

The other result in the section saw Abbeyview beat their
Dunfermline neighbours Headwell 102-73.

Meanwhile a weekend double for Portobello saw the ladies maintain their challenge to land the Division 1C honours with a commendable 82-65 win over Teviotdale at Hawick.

It is a result that puts them joint top with East Lothian but 50 shots adrift of the
Garden County elite and that means Porty must win the final
encounter when the two teams clash at the seasiders’ venue this weekend.
