Boxing: Craigmillar coach hails Paulin poise

Craigmillar amateur boxing club coach Kenny McCartney today paid tribute to the stylish way Meadowbank lightweight southpaw Lewis Paulin outboxed Tony James in the semi-finals of the Scottish Senior Championships at Inverurie’s Garioch Sports Centre.

Eastern and Intermediate champion Paulin swept to an emphatic 24-10 points win over Capital rival James with McCartney admitting: “We had no complaints. Paulin jabbed and moved well so that Tony never really got into his normal boxing style pattern.’’

Paulin will face Newarthill’s Charlie Flynn – a 13-5 winner over Viewpark’s Michael McGurk in the final at Meadowbank later this month.

Lochend coach Terry McCormack hailed the 10-8 points win that his light-welterweight Lewis Benson scored over 1314 club rival, James Thomson.

“When their semi-final bout started both Benson and Thomson had two wins apiece over each other but I told Lewis to stick and move by using his long left jab and right uppercuts to keep Thomson on the outside,” revealed McCormack.

In the final, Benson will look to avenge his clubmate Elias Gear’s 9-5 defeat by Barrhead’s Steven Rae.

Lochend’s Pushker Singh grabbed a flyweight final place against Garnock Valley’s Martin Beveridge by outscoring Glasgow Noble Art’s Jamie Wilson 16-14.

Singh’s Lochend clubmate, light-heavyweight Stevie Nicol, couldn’t match Holyrood’s Brian Forsyth as the latter won their semi-final 22-15. Forsyth now clashes with Glasgow Dennistoun’s James Cunningham in the final. Another Lochend fighter, Tommy Philbin, had to call off from his bout with Alloa’s Darren Reid on medical grounds.
