Commonwealth Games: Duncan Scott predicts bright future for swimmers

The 20-year-old claimed a silver on the final day of the swim meet in the men’s 200m individual medley.

It completed a fine six days for him personally, while the swimming team overall finished with nine medals.

“I think the last few days have been massively positive for Scottish swimming,” Scott, of University of Stirling, said.

“We have seen some great performances on a world stage while there is some great young talent coming through the ranks.

“In terms of the 200m IM, I didn’t know where I was after the breaststroke leg. Just like every race, I race the boys around me. I just tried to get my hand on the wall first. I usually have a good freestyle leg and I was just trying to battle away. To get a silver was good.”

Australian Mitch Larkin won the race in a time of 1:57.67 with Scott second in 1:57.86.

University of Edinburgh’s Mark Szaranek finished fourth in a time of 1:59.24, just missing out on his second medal of the meet.

Camilla Hattersley was seventh in the women’s 400m freestyle final while University of Edinburgh’s Lucy Hope, 21, was eighth in the women’s 50m backstroke final.

In the 4x100m relay races to finish the meet, the Scottish men finished in fourth and the women finished in fifth.

Heart of Midlothian teenager Keanna Macinnes was involved in the women’s team.

The diving meet, featuring Capital divers Grace Reid, James Heatly and 16-year-old James Heatly, begins today.
