Cricket: Young guns liven up East One title race

Carlton II’s youngsters produced some great batting and bowling on Saturday to ensure that the East One title race will go right to the wire.

Their comprehensive 139-run victory over Dunfermline at Grange Loan coupled with Glenrothes’ match with Musselburgh being off means that the latter still have to win on the last day this coming weekend to ensure they are crowned champions. Any slip up against Largo could let in Carlton II who themselves will be taking on Marchmont.

At the weekend the two star batsmen for Carlton II were teenagers Kyle Macpherson and Matt Wells.

The former hit 77 and the latter 51 as the hosts posted 226-8.

In reply the Fifers never really got going and once again it was two teenagers taking centre stage. Mo Ahmed took 4-17 and Gair Currie 3-27 as Dunfermline were all out for 87.

Murrayfield DAFS gave themselves a chance of avoiding
relegation with a 70-run win over Holy Cross at Arboretum.

In the third and final match played in East One, former England A player Mike Powell’s
superb 162 not out for Grange II helped them post 312-3 against Largo at Fettes, the visitors then being bowled out for just 82.
