Penicuik Cricket Club start season with win
Penicuik hosted Kelso in week two of the championship. The visitors won the toss at an overcast Kirkhill and decided to bowl first.
Penicuik lost Calum Steel early on but reached 50 for 1 with Craig Thyssen and Matthew Foulds establishing a platform to the innings.
Thyssen departed for a well made 27. Very disciplined Kelso bowling brought a couple of quick middle order wickets, and at the halfway stage Penicuik were on 85-4.
Foulds went to 50 and Penicuik past 100 in a partnership with captain Chris Ashforth (21) to rebuild the innings ready for a launch at the final 10 overs. However, once both fell – Foulds for a well made 70 – nobody really found runs particularly easy to come by and the innings came to an end on 157.
Kelso, in reply, lost two early wickets before overseas amateur J Takos (29) steadied the innings for the visitors. The introduction of Penicuik spinners Hafiz and Khalil really started to apply pressure to Kelso and the increased run rate led to further wickets. Keslo skipper D Wilson threatened to get his team close with a well crafted 43, but once captain Ashforth had him caught behind on his return, Penicuik managed to close the game out by 14 runs. Pick of the bowlers: Ashforth 10-3-20-3.
A great start to the campaign, Penicuik travel to Grange this Saturday.
