Currie hooker Scott suffers shoulder woe

Currie will be without hooker Fergus Scott for tomorrow’s RBS Regional rugby cup clash against Heriot’s at Malleny Park (kick-off 2pm) after the former Scotland Under-20 cap fractured a shoulder in last weekend’s Premiership draw with Boroughmuir.

The loss of Scott, younger brother of full internationalist, Matt, is a blow not only to Currie but also Glasgow Warriors, who have snapped him up on a development contract.

Another Currie regular in the wars is utility back Jamie Forbes, who could be out for three weeks with a leg injury, but Australian Adam Hinds is due to return after an absence of over two months for a match which sees both teams put unbeaten cup records on the line.

Currie have won both their cup games so far whereas Heriot’s have won all four of theirs.

The Goldenacre outfit have prevailed while giving outings to up-and-coming fringe players, the latest being former Ross High winger Mike Paterson, who is in line for a debut in a highly-experienced back-line.

Into the same category comes Currie flanker Rhys Davies, a member of the latest Scotland Under-20 squad who is home from Loughborough University. “Rhys is likely to get his first start with both Mike Entwhistle and Mark Cairns unavailable,” said Currie coach Ally Donaldson. Davies is a former Watson’s College prospect who spent time in New Zealand before returning to his local 
Currie club at the beginning of this season and coming off the bench against Aberdeen for a debut appearance.

Boroughmuir head for Haddington (kick-off 1.30pm) with Darren Miller lined up for a hooking debut as Mike Brown has returned to Australia for the festive period and Sean Crombie is now working in the Middle East. Miller has been impressing in the reserves and in occasional cup outings off the bench. Making a first appearance on the Boroughmuir bench will be Jack Achiclles, a flanker from New Zealand.

Elsewhere, Watsonians visit Stewart’s/Melville hoping to follow up a 16-12 league win at Inverleith earlier this season. Last weekend Stew/Mel drew at home with Biggar, an improvement on a one-point defeat when the teams last met.

Musselburgh got back to winning ways last weekend against Kirkcaldy and head for a Lasswade side still to get off the mark in the cup.
