Cycling: Skinner falls short in quest

Capital teenager Callum Skinner missed out on a chance to compete in today’s individual sprint medal deciders at the
European Under-23 Championships in Portugal after
exiting the competition at the quarter-final stage.

Skinner was sixth quickest in yesterday’s qualifiers and saw off Ukrainian cyclist Gennadi Genus before ousting his Great Britain team mate Pete Mitchell to book a place in the quarter-finals.

There he clashed with Charlie Conord of France. Skinner took the first leg in the best of three contest but the Frenchman squared matters in the
second ride and clinched
his semi-final spot in the
decider.

Skinner will now be hoping to earn a podium place in his
final event of the week, the
Keirin, which takes place on Sunday.
