Eilidh Doyle wants no regrets from Euro Championships in Belgrade

Pitreavie’s Olympic bronze medallist will go into the European Indoor Championships with a double chance at increasing her impressive haul, firstly in the 400 metres and then in the 4x400m relay.

Despite turning 30 last week, the Edinburgh University graduate has no intention of winding down and retiring into family life with husband Brian, not when there are more prizes within reach – and goals to meet – between now and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“Brian had to leave the sport because of injuries,” she said. “And he always looked at times and went ‘I could have done that’ or ‘I could have beaten him’. I don’t want to have that. I don’t want to feel I could have achieved a certain time but not done it. Medals are great but I’ll now be after that satisfaction that will come with saying, ‘that was a great race – I don’t think I could have gone any faster’.”

Six Scots made the trip out to Serbia yesterday, including Capital high jumper Allan Smith and Lasswade’s Guy Learmonth who has medal hopes in the 800m.

But the pick of the bunch will be the in-form Laura Muir, tipped for a golden 1500/3000m double following two European records already in 2017.
