Evan Oliphant and Phil Trodden are Edinburgh's main cycling medal hopes

However, with the demise of the Meadowbank Velodrome and the growing popularity of the Sir Chris Hoy track, Edinburgh’s position of dominance has been overtaken by riders from the west of Scotland and there are fewer youngsters coming through.

The main medal hopes are established riders such as Evan Oliphant and Phil Trodden in the men’s endurance events and Bruce Croall in the sprints where he lines up alongside fellow veterans Ivor Reid and Matt Haynes – a trio likely to form the City of Edinburgh team sprint squad.

The women’s sprints promise some keen competition, with Eleanor Richardson, who recently competed for Great Britain at the European Championships, multi World Masters medallist Louise Haston and Emma Baird, who won four medals last year for Edinburgh Road Club but is now with the Glasgow Sprint team.

Among the rising stars is Lulu Bartlett of the Racers. She will be looking to challenge for a place on the podium in the women’s endurance events.

Racing starts tonight and concludes on Sunday.
