Extra time relief for Whitehill in cup tie

Leith Athletic 2, Whitehill Welfare 3 (aet)

Whitehill travelled to north Edinburgh last Saturday for a South of Scotland second round cup tie against Leith Athletic.

In the second minute the Whitehill defence were caught on the break and the shot from the edge of the box gave the home side an early lead. Whitehill responded immediately with Steven Manson’s effort tipped over by the home goalkeeper. Leith were proving to be dangerous on the break and Walker had to look lively to prevent Leith increasing their lead.

Whitehill continued the second half where they had left off with the bulk of possession in creating the most chances. From a corner McIntosh found Robertson inside the box and his low shot beat the keeper for the equaliser.

Just after an hour, in a nice move involving Manson, Sproule and Robertson, Wayne McIntosh beat the last defender, skipped round the keeper to slot home for 2-1.

With 15 minutes left, Leith were awarded a free kick at the edge of the Whitehill box, Walker blocked the initial shot but was unable to stop the rebound being driven home for a Leith equaliser.

In the additional 30 minutes a Sproule shot was blocked by the home keeper. However, with three minutes remaining and a penalty shoot out looming, a low corner from Moffat was deflected by the Leith centre half past his own goalkeeper.
