A great 1-1 draw for Arniston in East Renfrewshire, and they now look forward to this weekend’s replay at Newbyres Park.
Both goals came after the break on a heavy, strength-sapping pitch following an opening 45 minutes in which Neilston failed to capitalise mon several Arnie mistakes.
Arniston, whose player resources were tight without the likes of a fit Scott Garden and Kevin Moffat, settled to a better game in the second period with the sloping pitch to their advantage and a half-time boosting words of wisdom from the boss as Arniston reshuffled the pack.
Nicknamed “The Farmer’s Boys”, Neilston – from the Central District First Division – were a workmanlike side with some experienced players and two useful strikers in a 4-4-2 set-up and they broke the deadlock in the 70th minute against the run of play when a shot from outside the box by Derek Kennedy beat Disco Cornet to put the hosts 1-0 up.
The lead, however, only lasted five minutes. After a tip-over save by the home goalkeeper, a second consecutive Arnie corner saw Greg Callaghan get the final header into the Neilston net to square it at one apiece and score the 30th Arniston goal of the season.
Both teams did have their chances to score the winner in the closing minutes. However, a tight but goalless finish means a top replay set for this Saturday and Arniston hoping for a good crowd to cheer them on.
