Forrest gives Wotte hope

Mark WOTTE believes James Forrest is proof that Scottish football can have a bright future after hailing the Celtic youngster as “the light in the darkness”.

But the Scottish Football Association’s first ever performance director insists other talented youngsters must be given the chance to shine if football in the country is to progress.

The Dutchman took on the newly-created post in June and, providing his first report card today, the former Southampton manager says there are some encouraging signs for the future.

Wotte said: “I saw that Kilmarnock and Celtic recently only had five Scottish players on the pitch from 22 and that makes me very sad. But the best player on the pitch was a 19-year-old Scottish player and that’s the light in the darkness for me. It means there are good, young Scottish players and we should give them more of a chance, more first team football.”
