Edinburgh give it all to reach semis

Edinburgh UNIVERSITY have reached the semi-finals of the inter-Scottish Universities Queen’s Park Shield, which they won last season, when they travelled north to beat Dundee University 2-0 last night.

After defeating Spartans 3-2 in a pulsating East of Scotland Premier Division game at the weekend, the Edinburgh head coach Douglas Samuel was slightly concerned that another game coming so soon after that hectic 90 minutes might affect his young players. “We looked a wee bit leg-weary in the first half mainly because the boys had given so much on Saturday,” said Samuel. “However, we did great overall and scored two cracking goals.”

Mark Gair gave Edinburgh the lead with a superb 25-yard free kick before Russian student Andrey Kuzmenko embarked on a solo run in which he beat four Dundee players then set up Cyrus Mossavi who netted with an angular drive across the Dundee goalkeeper.

Tomorrow Edinburgh are in action again in the Scottish Universities League when they travel to meet the Stirling University Second XI while Heriot-Watt go west to face Glasgow University.
