Newtongrange Star comfortably moved into round two of the Scottish Junior Cup with a comprehensive 5-1 over Edinburgh United on Saturday.
A long ball over the top released Kris Renton after four minutes. The ball took an age to come down and Renton’s effort was saved by the feet of Easton. The ball broke to Lee Currie on the right; he clipped the ball to the back post where Lewis Coult cleverly headed the ball back across goal for Renton to nod the ball past the helpless Easton to put Nitten 1-0 up .
Star doubled their advantage after 11 minutes when the hard working Renton picked the ball up on the halfway line. He played the ball round the corner for the onrushing Currie who beat the toiling Brown to the ball. He pulled the ball back to Coult who deftly flicked the ball past the diving keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net.
The Star ended the tie as a contest after 57 minutes. CraigThomson created space for himself on the left and clipped a delightful ball into the box. Coult rose high above everyone to powerfully nod the ball home. Star further increased their lead after 66 minutes Blair Tolmie wanted the ball more than anyone else as he rose to bullet a Thomson corner high into the net. Two minutes later the same player inadvertently deflected a Ross Elliot shot over the despairing McQueen to reduce the deficit back to 4-1 .
Newtongrange were awarded a penalty after 75 minutes when Renton was hauled down inside the box. Renton picked himself up and expertly dispatched the ball into the bottom corner.
In the 89th minute Currie was first elbowed in the back then harassed by two Edinburgh players but Lee’s reaction saw him instead unfortunately red carded.
