Penicuik made the longest away trip of the season to meet relegation threatened Carnoustie Panmure on a breezy day in Angus.
They started brightly and with five minutes gone a long Darrell Young pass found Greg Ross in space behind the home defence but goalkeeper Ferrie blocked his effort.
Ross had another effort five minutes later as he met a defensive header inside the box but he volleyed wide of the upright. From the goal kick, Carnoustie counter-attacked and Black fired over from 30 yards out.
The game developed into a midfield struggle with little activity in any attacking sense but almost came to life with 26 minutes gone when Ryan Gay was cynically fouled by Black, who received a yellow card for his troubles.
The second half opened with Sean Patterson replacing Neil Jancyzk in the visitors line-up, but it was the home side who opened brightly with Scott prominent down the right.
