Hearts' Perry Kitchen in provisional USA Copa America squad

Hearts midfielder Perry Kitchen has been named in Jurgen Klinsmann's provisional 40-man USA squad for this summer Copa America. Should he make the final cut, he could potentially miss the start of his club's Europa League campaign.

The Copa America is being staged in the United States from June 3 to 26. Hearts’ first European tie will take place on June 30, so if the USA reach the latter stages then Kitchen would likely be on a summer break when his Tynecastle team-mates begin season 2016/17.

First, the 24-year-old must try to secure a place in Klinsmann’s final 23-man squad for the tournament. The USA will begin a training camp in Miami on May 16, meaning Kitchen is likely to miss the end of Hearts’ league campaign to meet up with his compatriots.

Klinsmann must decide on his final Copa America squad by May 20. Kitchen, capped three times by the USA, is not guaranteed a place and must compete with the likes of Alejandro Bedoya, Fabian Johnson and Jermaine Jones for a midfield berth.
