Hearts are entering a hugely important summer transfer window. After failing to look as dominant as supporters wished in winning the Scottish champions, with a route opening up to seriously challenge for a top four position in their first campaign back, the onus is on manager Robbie Neilson, sporting director Joe Savage and the club’s board to ensure a productive few months in which the team is properly shaped and ready to challenge at the top end of the Premiership.
But what can history tell us about what to expect? We look back at the previous 12 summer transfer windows and pick out the best signing made by the club in each of those.
5. 2016: Bjorn Johnsen
Again, slim pickings this year. The towering striker started slowly, hit a purple patch towards the end of Robbie Neilson's tenure and then fell off a cliff under Ian Cathro. Honourable mention: No. Photo: SNS Group Rob Casey
6. 2015: Igor Rossi
The Brazilian was signed as third-choice centre-back but ended up being the best at the position and an excellent left-back. Sold for profit too. Honourable mention: Juanma Photo: SNS Group Rob Casey
7. 2014: Osman Sow
The star striker for 18 months before being sold for seven figures. Honourable mention: Alim Ozturk, Prince Buaben, Neil Alexander, Morgaro Gomis Photo: SNS Group Craig Williamson
8. 2013: Danny Wilson
The only signing made that summer due to the club's administration, and not a bad one too. He captained the club for two seasons, including the 2014/15 promotion campaign. Photo: SNS Group Sammy Turner
