The 36-year-old has quit as head of recruitment at Preston North End after three years at Deepdale alongside manager Alex Neil.

The Championship club admitted in a statement that Savage decided to leave in order to take on a new job opportunity in 2021. The Lancashire Evening Post reports that the job is at a club north of the border and the Scottish Sun claim that club is Hearts.

Hearts are looking to a full-time successor to Craig Levein after the former director of football left the club in the summer following his sacking as manager.

Jim Jefferies was recruited in the summer as an advisor to the Tynecastle board to plug the gap, but this was only on a part-time basis and his six-month stint is due to end in January.
