This is why Hibs and Hearts players won't shake hands before tonight's Edinburgh derby

The rivals meet on league duty at Easter Road but despite teams and officials traditionally shaking hands pre-match, the gesture will be skipped after Scottish football’s Coronavirus Response Group suspended handshakes "with immediate effect”.

Speaking this week SPFL chief Neil Doncaster said: “We are in regular dialogue with our counterparts in England and Europe to share news and best practice on what is a serious and concerning situation.

“We will coordinate the game’s response to the challenges posed by the coronavirus outbreak in a responsible and planned manner. We will update clubs and fans on any developments."

The first Scottish case of the virus was confirmed on Sunday after a Tayside resident tested positive following a trip to Italy.

Matches in the Italian top flight have already been cancelled and similar measures could be taken in Scotland if the virus spreads.
