Hibs Ladies grind out a derby win

Despite a below-par performance, it was Hibernian Ladies that took the spoils in last night’s Edinburgh derby against Spartans at Albyn Park, Broxburn.

A goal in each half from Joelle Murray and Caroline Weir respectively sealed an unconvincing 2-0 victory for a Hibs side that were at times overrun by the visitors.

It wasn’t to be Spartans’ night with Louise Mason and Diana Barry both striking the woodwork, Hibs goalkeeper Shannon Lynn at her international best and two strong penalty appeals waved away by referee Mathilde Peace.

“I’ve seen us play a lot better,” commented Hibs boss Willie Kirk. “To beat Spartans 2-0 was a great result but our performance could’ve been a lot better.”

Disappointed Spartans coach Debbi McCulloch said: “I think that is the best football we have played all season. To come away with nothing to show for our efforts is disappointing but I’ve told the girls that we need to take the positives from it and that’s what we will do.

“We should’ve had two penalties but sometimes you get the rub of the green and sometimes you don’t.”

Hutchison Vale’s Scottish encounter with Forfar Farmington was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
