Hibs announce squad numbers for 2020/21 season as one player makes surprising shift

Hibs have confirmed their squad numbers for the 2020/21 season, with a handful of players making changes.

Summer arrivals Drey Wright, Alex Gogic, and Kevin Nisbet will wear numbers 8, 13, and 15 respectively.

Gogic and Nisbet keep the numbers they had at previous clubs Hamilton Accies and Dunfermline Athletic, while Wright takes over the number 8 shirt following the departure of Vykintas Slivka.

Elsewhere, Ryan Porteous will wear the number 5 shirt. The young defender broke into the Hibs first team wearing number 36 and last season took number 25. He said in an interview with Sky Sports that he wanted to “earn the right” to wear number 5, adding: “Number five has been a massive number at this club and a fair few legends have worn it. As a Hibs fan growing up, I want to earn it if it is going to come my way.”

Striker Jamie Gullan, who broke into the first team earlier this calendar year, has moved from 47 to 19 while attacking midfielder Fraser Murray has swapped 33 for 12.

The 21-year-old is the first Hibs player to wear number 12 since Filipe Morais in 2007/08 and only the fifth in the club's history to be given the number.

The remaining squad members have held onto their numbers from last season, with numbers 3 and 21 – worn by Steven Whittaker and Jason Naismith last term – both left vacant.

Numbers 25-40 have not yet been allocated – although that could change with a number of youngsters potentially added to the first-team pool this term – while back-up goalie Kevin Dabrowski looks set to continue wearing number 41.

Ben Stirling and Sean Mackie will hold onto number 42 and number 43 respectively.
