Hibs debrief: Martin Boyle rediscovering his best form at just the right time

Martin Boyle scored twice and set up the third and there's no reason why he can't run the show this weekend too.

The Australian internationalist went through a barren spell with no goals or assists and was understood to be dealing with personal issues as well as playing. Whether those issues have been sorted or something in the new team set-up has just clicked, the winger/forward looks to be returning to his absolute best right before the visit of Aberdeen.

That he is equally as much of a threat playing in his usual role on the wing, as an auxiliary centre-forward, or as a wide-forward in a front three means Ross has myriad options at his disposal and it could prove vital as we appraoch the business end of the season.

With new signings Chris Cadden and Jackson Irvine impressing; Scott Allan available once more, and Kevin Nisbet due to embark on another scoring spree, can Hibs finally end their Dons hoodoo and see off the Pittodrie side in what will be a huge game in the battle for third – or even second – place?

Player of the match

Martin Boyle got a goal and an assist and was a constant, speedy thorn in St Mirren's side. Honourable mention to Jamie Murphy who put in a tireless shift and was unlucky to hit the post with a fine effort in the second half.

Defining moment

Kristian Dennis looked dangerous for St Mirren early on so it was a surprise to see him sacrificed for back-up ‘keeper Dean Lyness when Jak Alnwick was given his marching orders. Hibs seemed to get a boost from the departure of Dennis and Alnwick's dismissal and they came out a different beast at the start of the second half.

Referee watch

Alan Muir didn’t hesitate to send Alnwick off and had little alternative. Got the Hibs penalty call right, let the game flow, and wasn’t overly fussy.

Nisbet-watch

If Kevin Nisbet was sulking after the events of transfer deadline day he certainly didn’t let it show. He worked hard and may well have given Jack Ross something to think about ahead of the weekend.
