Hibs defender Ryan Porteous 'fine' after injury scare against St Mirren

Hibs head coach Jack Ross has confirmed that Ryan Porteous is fighting fit after the defender suffered an injury scare in the dying moments of the 3-0 win at St Mirren.

The 21-year-old received treament on the pitch after the final whistle at the Simple Digital Arena after coming off worst in a challenge with Buddies striker Lee Erwin.

Porteous cried out in pain as he crumpled to the turf and didn’t move, with medical staff rushing onto the pitch to tend to the centre-back as the rest of the players left the field.

The Scotland Under-21 internationalist has twice spent an extended period of time on the sidelines with a knee injury, missing more than nine months of action and 39 matches for Hibs, and there was understandably concern for his welfare from the coaching staff.

However, Porteous was able to walk off the pitch unaided and the Easter Road boss confirmed the defender hadn’t suffered any damage.

Ross told Hibs TV: “Ryan was just winded; he fell awkwardly and landed on his back so he got a little bit of a fright.

"It was quite a sore one to begin with but he’s fine now. He didn’t get much sympathy from the rest of the changing room.”

Ross was relieved that the centre-half hadn’t sustained a serious injury, adding: “He’s part of a defensive unit that has been outstanding all season, and their record in terms of not conceding from open play deserves a lot of credit.”
