Stepping in for Paul Hanlon, McGregor took the captain's armband and turned in an assured performance against the league-leaders.

Sky Sports pundit James McFadden was impressed with the former Ibrox defender’s display, branding his showing “magnificent”.

McFadden said: “McGregor was outstanding. He's dominant in the air, sees danger coming.

"He's come in after however long out and he was magnificent.”

Speaking after the game, McGregor added: “I was tired towards the end; I’ve not played that much but every time I get the chance to put this strip on it's an honour.

"I just want to do the team and fans proud. It doesn't get any easier the older you get but if I come off the park having given 100 per cent then I’m happy.”
